Retailer outlines plans to open more than 500 stores in 2006

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Bentonville, Ark.) has announced plans to add over 60 million square feet of gross retail space globally for its fiscal year beginning Feb. 1, 2006. The retail giant said it will open over 555 new units: 270 – 280 supercenters; 20-30 traditional discount stores; 15-20 Neighborhood Markets; and 30-40 Sam’s Clubs.

The company said it also plans to construct two new regional general merchandise distribution centers and three new food distribution centers during the next fiscal year. Combined, these five distribution centers are expected to add over 5 million square feet of distribution space.
