Discount retailer announces president’s resignation, management shakeup

Ross Stores Inc. (Pleasanton, Calif.) has announced the resignation of president and coo James Peters. Michael Balmuth, currently vice chairman and ceo, has assumed the additional title of president.

Among a number of other executive changes, effective immediately: Gary Cribb has been named executive vp and coo, directing store operations for both Ross discount clothing stores and dd’s Discounts. Cribb had been senior vp, store operations since 2002, after joining the company from Staples Inc. (Framingham, Mass.), where he had been senior vp, sales and operations. He had also held operational management positions in the prior decade with Office Depot Inc. (Delray Beach, Fla.) and The May Department Store Co. (St. Louis).

Also, James Fassio has been promoted to executive vp of property development, construction and store design. He joined Ross as vp of real estate in 1988.

As of year-end 2004, Ross Stores operated 639 Ross stores in 26 states and Guam and 10 dd’s Discounts stores in California.
