Britain has begun to reopen non-essential retail after months of lockdowns, reports The New York Times.

This includes retailers like gyms, salons and non-essential stores, Additionally, The New York Times reports that thousands of pubs also reopened today, currently limited to outdoor service.

Today was the first step in a phased reopening that will last until June 21, when the government is hoping to lift all restrictions in England. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are following similar reopening plans.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson reportedly called the plans “a major step forward in our road map to freedom.”
