Jean Paul Gaultier announced plans to open a U.S. boutique in 2002 on Madison Avenue. Philippe Starck will design the 2700-square-foot “Galeries Gaultier” concept store, which will house women's and men's ready-to-wear, jeanswear, accessories and fragrances. The New York debut is part of a larger plan to rollout three new-concept stores a year in Asia, the U.S. and Europe.

The one-level space currently houses leather goods retailer Dooney & Bourke, which will relocate a few blocks away. According to a report in Women's Wear Daily, the uptown site was chosen because it fits the image of couture and luxury characteristic of Gaultier.
