Retail Sales: Out with a Whimper

But 2000 sales up 3.4 percent overall

The Commerce Department reported last Friday that retail sales were up .1 percent in December, slightly better than the .5 percent increase in November. Department stores suffered a .8 percent decrease in sales at general-merchandise stores, while clothing stores enjoyed a .9 percent increase from November.

However, The Wall Street Journal reported that retail sales for 2000 were up 3.4 percent, mostly due to strong sales in the first half of the year.
