Trump Tower Chicago Nixes Retail Plans

Dedicated shopping space to become conference center

Published

Donald Trump has abandoned plans to create a retail component at the Trump International Hotel & Tower in Chicago. The Trump Organization (New York) hired CBRE Inc. in 2008 to lease the spaces before their completion; however, the four-level, 83,000-square-foot space has remained vacant since its 2009 completion. In 2012, Trump suspended attempts to fill the space, and last week, announced that the space will instead be used for conference rooms and meeting spaces.

Although Trump told Crain’s Chicago Business “We could have rented the retail … but I think this is better for the hotel,” Chicago real estate experts speculate that shoppers are disinclined to venture off retail destination Michigan Ave., two blocks east of the Trump International. Trump says the lowermost floor might still be set aside for retail.
